UK Welcomes University of Lampung for Indonesian Culture Celebration

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 2, 2014) — The University of Kentucky is teaming up with the University of Lampung (Unila) from Indonesia to explore the rich culture of Indonesia through dance performances, art exhibits and lectures.

"Introducing Lampung Culture for Global Appreciation: A Harmony of Diversity in Indonesia" will take place at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, in the Briggs Theatre inside the Fine Arts Building.

The Dance Arts Education Program at Unila is sharing the traditional dances and arts of Lampung, Indonesia, on an international level to protect and preserve Indonesian culture.

This event provides Unila dance students the opportunity to enhance their dancing abilities and to promote the university's Dance Program on an international level.

Twenty representatives from Unila will perform dances from each ethnic group of Lampung, such as the traditional Lampung dance "Sigeh Penguten," the Javanese dance "Gamyong," and the Balinese dance "Pendet." The Sigeh Penguten dance, also known as the Worship Dance, depicts the cultural tradition of welcoming visitors of Lampung. The Gamyong dance exhibits the peacefulness of Javanese culture. The Pendet dance includes sharp, precise motions with a religious undertone.

A lecture and exhibition on Indonesian culture will precede the music and dance performances.

Unila, the only state university in the province of Lampung, strives to join Indonesia's top-10 universities list by 2025. To do this, the university has developed international programs such as this event to educate others on Indonesian culture.
