Walk Your Dog for a Cause: Bully Breed Awareness Walk

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 7, 2016)  From the group that brought the University of Kentucky Santa PAWS in December, Promoting Animal Welfare and Services (PAWS), is hosting its fifth annual Bully Breed Awareness Walk on Saturday, April 16.

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., at Thoroughbred Park. All paws will start walking through a downtown route at approximately 10:30 a.m. The walk is free and open to the public and, of course, dogs! All dog breeds are welcome.

The Bully Breed Awareness Walk aims to put an end to “bully breed” (pit bulls, German shepherds, etc.) discrimination and breed specific legislation (BSL) through educational activism. BSL is the discrimination and banning of a specific breed in a given area and is responsible for the deaths of thousands of animals based on only physical features. The Bully Breed Awareness Walk brings together the community, UK campus and local animal organizations, such as Lexington Humane Society and Lexington Pit Crew, to take a stance against breed discrimination and legislation! The event will give members of the community a chance to help promote responsible ownership, while also educating those in attendance on these matters through an expert guest speaker, fun activities and door prizes before the walk!

PAWS, the organization hosting the walk, is a student volunteer organization that is dedicated to the welfare of animals. The organization strives to educate the public, breaking down the walls of discrimination of “bully-breeds” and taking a stand against BSL through such education. They organize several local volunteer opportunities with reputable animal adoption and welfare organizations. It is the mission of PAWS to positively impact the lives of any animal in need through volunteer efforts, educating the public and advocating for those who need PAWS to be their voice.
