LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 11, 2015) — The Student Activities Board Multicultural Affairs Committee announces that Rosario Dawson, actress and Latina activist, will be the featured speaker at the second installment of the Women of the World Lecture Series at 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, in Memorial Hall on the University of Kentucky campus.

Rosario Dawson is an accomplished actress, earning the Best Actress in a Motion Picture Award at the 2009 NAACP Image Awards and the “Half-Life” Award at the 2008 Cine Vegas International Film Festival.

Along with her busy professional life, Dawson devotes a lot of her time to philanthropy. She co-founded Voto Latino, a movement that gives the growing Latino population a voice in world politics, in 2004. She also actively participates in V-Day, The Lower Eastside Girls Club and the Environmental Media Association. She was recently awarded the President’s Volunteer Service Award for her contributions.

“We are so very excited for our second speaker, Rosario Dawson, as part of the Women of the World lecture series,” Multicultural Affairs Director Kristyn Cherry said. “I think she will have an amazing story to share with our campus on her journey as a Latina actress and activist.”

The event will be a lecture that allows attendees to listen to Dawson talk about women empowerment and leadership development, especially within the Latino community. Dawson will also share stories about the journey she had to take to become a successful actress as a minority woman.

The Women of the World Series was created to celebrate a diverse group of women within various forms of power. Last semester’s speaker for the Women of the World Series was Judy Smith, the “real life Olivia Pope.”
