WUKY's Phoenix Fridays Bring Live Music to Downtown Lexington June 17

LEXINGTON, Ky. (June 16, 2016) The June edition of WUKY's Phoenix Fridays summer series of free, outdoor concerts takes place Friday, June 17, in Phoenix Park in downtown Lexington. Gates open at 5 p.m., music starts at 5:30 and the performers are The Landers, Wax Fang and David Wax Museum. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

This is the second in the series created by WUKY and produced by the Downtown Lexington Corporation. Phoenix Fridays take place the third Friday of each month in May through August. Each night features three bands — a combination of local and nationally touring acts.

Friday's first act, The Landers, are from Lexington, and their Facebook page describes their music this way: "The Landers sonic palette weaves the shadow and light of roots Americana, indie pop, soul and rock." They are fronted by Maggie Lander who won the 2015 Lexington Music Award for Best Singer Songwriter.

Wax Fang, from Louisville, features Jacob Heustis and Scott Carney playing a mix of rock genres that include classic, psychedelic, progressive and experimental rock music, as well as electronic and folk.

The headliner, David Wax Museum, brings its own sound of folk rock. According to the band's website: "As a student at Harvard, (David) Wax began traveling south of the border to study and immerse himself in the country’s traditional music and culture. Back in Boston, he met fiddler/singer Suz Slezak, whose love of traditional American and Irish folk music fused with Wax’s Mexo-Americana into a singular, energetic blend that captivated audiences and critics alike."

WUKY's Phoenix Friday schedule for the rest of the summer is:

Friday, July 15

1. Warren Byrom and the Fabled Canelands

2. Star & Micey

3. 7Horse (headliner)

Friday, Aug. 19

1. Ben Lacey & Friends

2. Nellie Pearl

3. Vandaveer (headliner)
