LEXINGTON, Ky. (July 30, 2013) — One of the University of Kentucky's youngest stars will move up from a swing position to take over the role of Kate in the Tony-nominated Broadway show, "Annie: The Musical," beginning today. This will be 8-year-old Brooklyn Shuck's first starring role on Broadway.

As Kate, Brooklyn will use her versatile talents to portray the next-to-youngest orphan of the six orphans in the cast of "Annie." Together the group comprises a gritty, ‘unloved’ and vulnerable group of young girls.

After showing special talent in dance class at a very early age, Brooklyn joined UK Opera Theatre's Academy for Creative Excellence (ACE). The community outreach program promotes a well-rounded and balanced approach to arts training that focuses on both individual development and teamwork. At ACE, Brooklyn was able to not only hone her dancing skills but also study voice and acting. While the program maintains a fun atmosphere that reflects the joy of live performance, it also strives for professional-level standards and intends to train children and youth for potential careers in the performing arts, from triple threat performers in musical theatre to actor-singers in opera and beyond.

During her time studying with ACE, Brooklyn appeared in several productions including UK Opera Theatre's town-and-gown musical revue, "It's a Grand Night for Singing!" and at the annual holiday sing-along concert "Alltech Holiday Celebration of Song," where Brooklyn was the lead vocalist on “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus.”

Brooklyn, the daughter of Angie and T.G. Shuck, began auditioning in New York City around a year ago for such shows as "The Grinch" and "Godspell 2032." The young talent was called back to the Big Apple to audition for a swing role in the Broadway revival of the popular hit "Annie" last December. A student of Garden Springs Elementary in Lexington, Brooklyn first learned she was cast as the understudy to the actresses playing orphans Molly, Kate, Tessie, July and Duffy in January. She has since landed a starring role as Kate.

Tickets for "Annie" are available through www.ticketmaster.com, by calling 877-250-2929, or in person at the Palace Theatre box office (1564 Broadway between 46th and 47th Streets). Premium seating is available.

ACE is an outreach program of UK Opera Theatre in the UK School of Music at the UK College of Fine Arts. The School of Music has garnered national recognition for high-caliber education in opera, choral and instrumental music performance, as well as music education, composition, theory and music history.
