'First Friday' Events Bring Faculty Together

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 4, 2013) ― University of Kentucky faculty of all disciplines have an opportunity each month to gather informally, socialize and share ideas.  UK's Council of Endowed Professors and Chairs is once again sponsoring "First Friday," a monthly social event during the academic year.

The inaugural First Friday for 2013-14 is 4:30-6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, in the Library of the Boone Center.  All faculty members are invited.

"First Fridays are intended to promote collegial interactions among UK faculty," said Phil Kraemer, Chellgren Endowed Chair for Undergraduate Excellence and professor of psychology who also serves as secretary for the Council of Endowed Professors and Chairs.  "We are especially hopeful to see new faculty take advantage of this opportunity to meet and converse with colleagues from across campus."

The council, co-sponsored by the Office of the Provost, currently comprises 234 endowed professors and chairs from all 16 colleges of the university and UK Libraries.  Through the council, endowed professors and chairs collaborate on activities of common interest, including:

• Promoting the intellectual capital of UK faculty;

• Attracting and retaining the best students;

• Working with the community to address contemporary issues;

• Assisting the university to attract outstanding faculty; and

• Encouraging the extramural support of scholarship.
