LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 5, 2018) — The Gaines Center for the Humanities at the University of Kentucky is seeking highly motivated second-year undergraduate students for its undergraduate fellowship program.

The Gaines Fellowship is an intensive two-year program awarded to 12 outstanding undergraduate students. Selected fellows will take a four-credit hour seminar course as a cohort focused on the humanities with outstanding UK faculty both semesters of their junior year. They will then carry out an independent thesis project in their senior year, under the guidance of the Gaines Center director and a faculty committee. The thesis project allows fellows to conduct passionate, mentored research and to demonstrate in-depth understanding of their research upon defense. All Gaines Fellows are awarded a stipend of $2,000 their junior year and $3,000 their senior year.

Undergraduate Gaines Fellows also enjoy the use of the Gaines Center’s three historic buildings on north campus, which include study rooms and a computer lab. They will also have access to a network of successful Gaines alumni, many of whom now hold prominent positions within their communities and have attended graduate programs at Harvard University, Emory University, University of California, Los Angeles, and many other prestigious universities both here and abroad.

Undergraduate students in all disciplines, from art history and English to biology and chemical engineering, with any intended profession, are given equal consideration. Applicants must have two years of planned undergraduate study remaining and an outstanding academic record (normally measured at a 3.5 GPA or better).

Interested applicants are encouraged to visit www.uky.edu/gainescenter/gaines-apply or reach out to Associate Director Chelsea Brislin for more information. An information session will take place 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov.  8, in Room 202 of The 90. You can RSVP for this information session here. Applications are due 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, 2019.
