Research Matters Without the Pomp

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 14, 2010) - Pack a lunch, find a seat and get comfortable for another installation of the University of Kentucky Department of Gender and Women's Studies Spring 2010 Research Matters Series.

Sociology Professor Ana S.Q. Liberato will present, "The Gender Politics of the Trujillo Regime in the Dominican Republic: An Oral History" at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 15, in Breckenridge Hall, Room 107.

Liberato, who was born and raised in the Dominican Republic, focuses her research on race, ethnicity, gender; political identity and political attitudes; well-being and health; economic development and social policy.

The Research Matters Series, which began last year, is part of a GWS departmental effort to foster interdisciplinary research and conversation, according to department chair Patricia Cooper.

"We showcase the research of faculty members, including GWS department members and affiliated faculty, in an informal setting," said Cooper. "The research need not be in a polished form, so it is a great place to try out work in progress. Come, relax and enjoy a great conversation."

Education Professor Karen Tice organized the series this year, averaging two or three lectures a semester.

"The series is designed to showcase innovative and significant interdisciplinary research in gender studies," she explained. "Both speakers this semester are focusing on gender in differing transnational contexts." Professor Liang Luo will hold a lecture titled, "White Snake, Wind Rose, and the 1950’s Moment in China and East Germany" on Thursday, April 22.

The event, sponsored by the Department of Gender & Women's Studies, is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Betty Pasley at 859-257-1388 or Betty.Pasley@uky.edu.
