Scholarship Deadline This Week

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 13, 2010)Time is ticking for high school seniors who want to be considered for competitive academic scholarships at the University of Kentucky.

Those interested need to apply by Friday, Jan. 15.

"We have set records with the quality of our freshman class the past few years at UK, and our goal is to continue to enroll the best and brightest students from across the Commonwealth, the country, and the world,” said Don Witt, assistant provost for enrollment management.

Students who have a 31 or higher ACT score or 1360 or above SAT score (M+CR) and a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.75, are encouraged to apply for a competitive scholarship. The evaluation of scholarship applicants considers factors such as: an essay, grades, test scores, leadership experiences, extracurricular activities, work experience, awards, recognition and community service. Students should look online for the application.

It is extremely important that students make sure their scholarship applications are hand delivered or postmarked by Friday, Jan. 15, to be considered for these competitive awards," said Sandy Copher, director of academic scholarship programs.

What other advice does Copher have for students applying for these scholarships?

"Spend time composing a well-written and thoughtful essay and be sure to have someone proofread the essay for errors in spelling and grammar," said Copher. "The application reviewer should know a little more about the student by reading the essay than by just reviewing the application and activities." Copher also suggests listing the activities that have been important to the student.

Incoming freshmen can find a complete list of the academic scholarships available to them and the minimum requirements of each online.

For fall 2010, the Flagship and Provost Scholarships are automatically awarded to students with qualifying scores based on their admission application and information. However, those students must be admitted and have their qualifying scores sent to UK by March 1.
