LEXINGTON, Ky. (Aug. 26, 2009) The Governor's Mansion in Frankfort will be the site of an August 27 event during which the University of Kentucky Institute for Workplace Innovation (iwin) will honor Kentucky companies that have been named national winners of the Alfred P. Sloan Awards for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility. The awards are part of the "When Work Works" program, an ongoing initiative of Families and Work Institute, the Institute for a Competitive Workforce (an affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce) and the Twiga Foundation.

Steve Beshear. “Better workplace practices will help Kentucky become not only an employer-of-choice but also a state-of-choice.”

Award winners and those receiving honorable mentions will be given awards and addressed by local and national officials as well as experts on workplace flexibility. In addition, winners will be featured in a national publication and recognized in the Congressional Record.

Applicants and winners of the Alfred P. Sloan Awards were benchmarked against other national employers regarding their implementation of effective workplace flexibility practices. Kentucky was selected as one of only 3 states to implement the initiative statewide.

“This is an excellent opportunity for the state's businesses to showcase their workplace flexibility practices and to get local, state and national publicity,” said Jennifer Swanberg, executive director of iwin.
