UK Focused on Fun, Safety for Football Game Days
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 6, 2012) — University of Kentucky President Eli Capilouto joined Lexington Mayor Jim Gray and other city and university officials today in announcing the 'game plan' for handling safety, security, traffic, parking and other issues relating to the Wildcats' seven home football games in Commonwealth Stadium this season.
UK kicks off its home schedule this Saturday, Sept. 8, at 7:30 p.m. against Kent State.
"The Big Blue Nation has great pride for our teams' success on and off the field, and we want to celebrate victory responsibly and in ways that protect everyone's safety and property," said Capilouto. "We want fans to enjoy their time at Commonwealth Stadium, so that we may stand proudly together in support of our team, while promoting a safe and respectful environment."
Gray encouraged fans to respect the neighborhoods surrounding the stadium. "We want fans to come to the game and enjoy themselves," the mayor said. "We just encourage everyone, as they're walking to and from the game, to respect the homes and yards of the neighbors near the stadium."
UK Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart said, "Lexington and UK are well known across the Southeastern Conference and the nation for having classy fans and creating a great atmosphere for major sporting events. Our message to all Wildcats is to please enjoy yourselves to the utmost while remembering to treat your fellow spectators with dignity and also be mindful of others who live in close proximity to the stadium."
"We are very fortunate to receive wonderful cooperation from a number of departments and officials from across campus and throughout greater Lexington in helping to make everything go smoothly," said Joe Monroe, chief of UK Police, which serves as the lead
agency on home football Saturdays. "It takes a great team effort involving police officers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, traffic engineering and control, parking and so many others. We really appreciate everyone's cooperation, and that includes our Wildcat fans."
