UK Students Celebrate Ag Awareness Day

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 17, 2012) – University of Kentucky College of Agriculture students will join their peers nationwide Wednesday, April 18, to draw attention to agriculture.

Ag Awareness Day will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the plaza area between Memorial Hall and Erikson Hall on the UK campus in Lexington.

“The students really want to educate the public about the impact agriculture has on our daily lives,” said Jason Headrick, director of student relations for the college.

Several UK student groups will help with the awareness project as well as outside commodity groups such as the Kentucky Beef Council, Kentucky Dairy Association, Kentucky Corn Growers’ Association, Kentucky Soybean Board and the Kentucky Livestock Coalition. The groups will set up interactive tables to help tell the story about how agriculture affects each person on campus and beyond. Food and T-shirts will also be available for visitors.

“I think it’s important to have Ag Awareness Day,” said Marissa Kruthaup, UK student and College of Agriculture ambassador. “Often the agricultural community doesn’t get the support it needs because people don’t understand what agriculture is and what it encompasses. I hope this event helps.”
