WUKY to Air Two Special Programs on July 4

Lexington, Ky. (June 29, 2012)  - WUKY will broadcast two specials on Independence Day, July 4, 2012.  The first program will be “Politics Take a Holiday,” performed by Capitol Steps at 8 p.m.  Immediately following the Capitol Steps program at 9 p.m., WUKY will broadcast “Groundwork: Democracy Close to Home,” hosted by NPR’s Scott Simon.

The Capitol Steps began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them. The group was born in December 1981 when some staffers for Senator Charles Percy were planning entertainment for a Christmas party. They decided to dig into the headlines of the day, and they created song parodies and skits that conveyed a special brand of satirical humor. Since they began, the Capitol Steps have recorded over 30 albums, including their latest, Take the Money and Run — for President. They've been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC and PBS, and can be heard four times a year on National Public Radio stations nationwide during their Politics Takes a Holiday radio specials.

WUKY will host Capitol Steps in a hilarious live performance on Oct. 21, 2012, at the Singletary Center for the Arts.  Tickets will go on sale on Tuesday, July 3, and can be purchased by visiting www.scfatickets.com

"Groundwork: Democracy Close to Home," a timely and sharply relevant one-hour special, tells stories of American democracy at the local level. Hosted by Scott Simon, the broadcast takes listeners to communities across the U.S., where local residents struggle with big issues. "Groundwork" explores the tone and flavor of democratic action in towns and cities, where one’s antagonist is not an opposing talking head or a politician from another state, but a neighbor.
