Chellgren Seminar Series Begins Tonight

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 16, 2014) — As the inaugural lecture of the 2014-15 Chellgren Seminar Series, UK professor of journalism Buck Ryan will deliver a talk titled “This I Believe: You can make Lexington a Great College Town” at 7 p.m. tonight in the William T. Young Library Auditorium.

"Welcome, good citizens, to the Lexington mayoral race, where 'We the People' are in charge,” said Ryan in an abstract about the lecture. "Election campaigns can be boring and frustrating because they focus on what the candidates must do to be elected. So, let's make the Lexington mayoral race exciting by creating 'The Citizens’ Agenda’ for change to make this the No. 1 college town in America. Come listen to what young voters are doing, and join the fun!”

Ryan, director of the Citizen Kentucky Project at the University of Kentucky’s Scripps Howard First Amendment Center, is a tenured associate professor of journalism in the School of Journalism and Telecommunications. He won the Provost’s Award for Outstanding Teaching in 2003 after serving eight years as director of the School of Journalism and Telecommunications from 1994 to 2002. He left the post to become the first executive director of the First Amendment Center, where he launched the Citizen Kentucky Project, which is designed to increase civic literacy and engagement among young people.

The purpose of the Chellgren Seminar Series is to contribute to the intellectual aspects of the undergraduate experience by inviting eminent scholars to deliver brief, provocative presentations on issues that expand our thinking and imagination.

The Chellgren Seminar Series is supported by The Chellgren Center which is part of the Academy of Undergraduate Excellence within the Division of Undergraduate Education at UK.
