Crosby Named Good Samaritan Endowed Chair

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Aug. 1, 2013) — Professor Richard A. Crosby in the University of Kentucky College of Public Health has been named the Good Samaritan Endowed Chair in Health Education, Research, Health Promotion, and Preventive Services.

"Endowed chairs are recognized for their outstanding academic service, leadership and significant scholarly contributions to their disciplines," said Dr. Stephen W. Wyatt, dean of the college. "Dr. Crosby has earned this honor by virtue of his 15 years of service as an instructor, as a mentor of faculty and students, in his role as a department chair, and as a leading researcher in sexual health interventions and methodological design."

Crosby also serves as associate dean for research and chair of the Department of Health Behavior, and as director of the UK Prevention Research Center, funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He has received several R01 research project awards from the National Institutes of Health, and he developed a CDC-designated Evidenced-Based Intervention called "Focus on the Future" that promotes safer sex among young black men.

To date, he has authored or edited six textbooks commonly used in schools of public health throughout the United States. In addition, he is well regarded in the HIV and sexually transmitted infection prevention field for his empirical investigations of effective strategies to promote the correct and consistent use of condoms among high-risk populations.
