Important Deadlines for Top Scholarships and Honors Program

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 11, 2012) –Deadlines to apply for top scholarships and the Honors Program are coming up in the next few days.

The deadline to apply for competitive scholarships is Friday, Jan. 13.

Students who have a 31 or higher ACT score or 1360 or above SAT score (writing portion not included) and a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.50 are encouraged to apply for competitive scholarships. In addition to GPA and test scores, officials also look at the strength and rigor of students' high school coursework, extracurricular activities, and leadership positions.

Students with qualifying GPAs and test scores must apply by Jan. 13. The application can be found here.

Vice Provost for Enrollment Management Don Witt has some advice for students filling out their applications.  "Students are encouraged to take their time when writing their essays, making sure to be neat and complete when answering everything asked of them on their competitive applications."

This year UK will award even more competitive scholarship funds, including adding more Singletary Scholarships.  The university's top scholarship will provide full tuition for four years (in-state or out-of-state), room and board, a $1,500 stipend each year, a one-time $2,000 stipend to use for Education Abroad programs and an iPad2.

In addition, UK will offer more Presidential Scholarships, which cover full tuition for four years (in-state or out-of-state).

For fall 2012, the Flagship and Provost Scholarships are automatically awarded to students with qualifying scores based on their admission application and information. However, those students must be admitted and have their qualifying scores sent to UK by March 1.

In addition to these competitive and automatic scholarships, UK offers a variety of other scholarships for prospective students including diversity, departmental, and program scholarships.  A new scholarship database website allows students to explore all of the opportunities available with one easy search.

Students should pay careful attention to the deadlines for these awards, as many of them share the Jan. 13 deadline.   Click here to find out more information about these scholarships.

In addition to scholarships, the deadline to apply for the Honors program at UK is also looming.

"UK is growing and enhancing our Honors program," said Witt.  "Being a part of this initiative will not only challenge students intellectually with rigorous courses, but will also provide them with an opportunity to share in a community of scholars looking to prepare themselves for success at every level."

Students who wish to apply for Honors at UK just need to visit the Honors website to find the application and criteria for the program.  The deadline is Jan. 15, 2012.

As a reminder, Feb. 15, 2012, is the deadline for incoming freshmen to apply for admission to UK and the priority date for applying for federal need-based financial aid.

The financial aid priority date for returning and transfer students is March 15, 2012.

Prospective transfer students have until June 1, 2012, to turn in their scholarship applications and Aug. 1, 2012, to apply for admission.
