Moliterno Named New Chair of Internal Medicine

Lexington, Ky. (Aug. 10, 2011) — Dr. David J. Moliterno has been appointed chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at University of Kentucky College of Medicine, effective Aug. 1, 2011.

An interventional cardiologist, Moliterno has served in several capacities since his arrival to UK in 2004, such as the Jefferson M. Gill Professor of Cardiology, chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, vice-chair of the Department of Internal Medicine, and medical director of the Gill Heart Institute.

Moliterno succeeds Dr. Frederick C. de Beer, who was recently appointed dean of the College of Medicine and vice president for clinical academic affairs. “My tenure as chair of the Department of Internal Medicine was enriched by wonderful colleagues,” said de Beer. “I care about this Department.  It is central to the academic and clinical development of the College of Medicine. I know David Moliterno. I trust and respect him. Under his leadership the department will be further propelled to excellence.”

“It is a great honor to become the chair of the Department of Internal Medicine,” said Moliterno. “Growing the cardiovascular service line over the past years was challenging yet enriching, and success came from the truly outstanding efforts of many fine colleagues.  So, too, the Department as well as the entire medical center is facing many challenging issues that affect us as clinicians, educators, and scientists. What assures our continued success at UK is the pure and simple truth of having terrific partners and colleagues throughout the enterprise.”

Moliterno received his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia, and his internal medicine training from Vanderbilt University Hospitals. He completed a fellowship in cardiovascular medicine at the University of Texas-Southwestern Medical Center, and he completed an additional interventional cardiology and research fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, where he remained as an attending staff cardiologist for 10 years before joining the University of Kentucky in 2004.

Moliterno is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, European Society of Cardiology, Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions, American Heart Association, and the American College of Cardiology. He is the immediate past Governor for the American College of Cardiology-Kentucky Chapter. He also is a member of the Association of Professors of Cardiology and Association of University Cardiologists. He has been voted among the Best Doctors in America since 2001 and is a life member of the National Registry of Who’s Who. Moliterno has been a visiting professor or invited lecturer in more than 30 countries.

Moliterno is the author or coauthor of over 250 publications, including 55 book chapters, and five textbooks. He has been the primary author of publications in Circulation, JACC, JAMA, Lancet, and the New England Journal of Medicine.
