New Musical by UK Alum Hits Opera House Stage

Published: Aug 20, 2013

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Aug. 20, 2013) The Bluegrass Opera will return to the Lexington Opera House this month to present the world premiere of a piece written by University of Kentucky School of Music alumnus Lorne Dechtenberg, a musical titled “Lady Windermere’s Fan.”

Based on the classic Oscar Wilde comedy of the same name, the show tells the story of a wealthy English household that is rocked by scandal, as rumors of marital infidelity turn a simple birthday into an ordeal that Lord and Lady Windermere won't soon forget. The production will feature some of central Kentucky’s most talented singer-actors, with Dechtenberg conducting from the piano.

Dechtenberg, who holds doctoral and master’s degrees from UK and was the recipient of a multi-year graduate fellowship, began writing the musical in 2005, when he had the opportunity to work with Tony award-winning Broadway producer Stuart Ostrow, but he only recently found time to complete the piece. Ostrow expressed great enthusiasm for the project, calling the unique musical flavor of the show, “completely Dechtenberg-imal.”

“This is doubly exciting for me,” said Dechtenberg, who has held the baton at The Bluegrass Opera since its inception in 2008. “Not only is it a triumph for BgO to return to the Lexington Opera House, but this time it’s with one of my own works, and it’s a real treat to watch it come together. We have some cast members joining us for the first time, and others who have been in as many as eight different productions with us. We’re all working hard, but we’re having lots of fun — you can’t help but have fun with Wilde’s material.”

Dechtenberg has blended a fair amount of Wilde’s dialogue with his own, as well as adding original music and lyrics, so the show should appeal to aficionados of the 19th century playwright, as well as to those looking for something new and unique.

The Bluegrass Opera is a nonprofit performing arts company that specializes in the performance of new musical works for the stage — operas, musicals, and everything in between. It is believed to be the only professional company in the country that is dedicated exclusively to premiering and championing new works and that does not charge composers a fee to submit their music.

“Lady Windermere’s Fan” will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Aug. 23 and 24, at the Lexington Opera House. Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors age 65 and up, and $15 for students with a valid ID. Tickets can be purchased from the Lexington Center box office or Ticketmaster.

UK School of Music at the UK College of Fine Arts has garnered national recognition for high-caliber education in opera, choral and instrumental music performance, as well as music education, composition, and theory and music history.
