Nominations for Darrell A. VanMeter Award for Outstanding Community Service Being Accepted Now

LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 16, 2016) — This year, the University of Kentucky Office of Student Involvement celebrates the 25th consecutive year the University of Kentucky will award the Darrell A. VanMeter Award for Outstanding Community Service.

Being accepted now through 5 p.m. Thursday, March 24, are nominations of undergraduate students for the Darrell A. VanMeter Award for Outstanding Community Service. By this deadline, all materials must be received.

Darrell A. VanMeter holds outstanding volunteer service achievements through this undergraduate award named in his honor. VanMeter, who was only a sophomore at the time of his death in 1991, was recognized by both the university community and his home community for his dedication to serving others. The impact of his "Good Samaritan" approach to helping others was apparent to faculty, staff and students alike. VanMeter touched the campus with his selfless heart and his outstanding displays of volunteerism. Service was not an isolated act, but a continuous way of life for him.

Members of the UK community are asked to reflect upon the students they interact with daily and nominate a student who they feel represents this spirit of service.

Undergraduate student juniors or seniors in good standing with the University of Kentucky are eligible to be nominated and to receive this award.

The Darrell A. VanMeter Award for Outstanding Community Service will be presented at the Annual University Honors & Recognition Awards Program sponsored by the Office of Student Involvement at 6 p.m. Monday, April 4, at the Hilary J. Boone Center. The recipient of this year’s award will also be invited to attend the UK Center for Community Outreach End-of-Year Celebration at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, at the Plantory (501 W. Sixth St., Ste. 250, Lexington).
