Nominations Open for Sarah Bennett Holmes Awards

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 2, 2011) - Nominations are currently being accepted for the 18th annual Sarah Bennett Holmes Awards, sponsored by the University of Kentucky Women’s Forum.

The Sarah Bennett Holmes Awards recognize women working at the University of Kentucky who strive to promote the growth and well-being of other women at the university and across the Commonwealth. These awards are designed to target efforts that might otherwise go unrecognized.

Awards are presented in two categories – faculty and staff. Any woman currently employed as a full-time, regular member of the UK faculty or staff is eligible to be nominated.

All nominees will be honored during the March 10 Sarah Bennett Holmes luncheon. Award recipients will receive a $1,000 honorarium, and will have their names inscribed on a plaque in the Main Building.

Nomination forms are available on the Web site of the UK Women’s Forum. Separate
forms are available to nominate either a faculty member or staff member.

Please note that all nominations and supporting materials must be received no later than 5 p.m. on Feb. 25.

Since 1994 the Sarah Bennett Holmes Awards have honored women who work at UK. Originally conceived as a program to honor female faculty, the awards expanded in 2005 to include staff members. Learn about past recipients here.

To reserve a seat at the March 10 awards luncheon, use this form. Luncheon reservations must be received by March 4.

Sarah Bennett Holmes, who served as UK’s dean of women from 1944 to 1957, championed the rights of women throughout her career. Widowed at a young age, Holmes raised four children while completing her own education. She then began a successful career at UK, where she inspired young women to persevere in the face of hardship and to pursue their career goals. Among her accomplishments, Holmes developed work programs for women during the depression. Holmes Hall is named in her honor.
