Open House Celebrates Five Years of Lifelong Learning in Morehead
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 30, 2013) — Six years ago, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Kentucky (OLLI@UK) approached a small group in Morehead to determine if a local lifelong learning program for older adults would be of interest to their community.
The excitement took off in that meeting, says program coordinator Diana Lockridge. Today, the program offers a variety of enrichment courses for older adults in and around Morehead.
"The program’s tag line, 'Where Curiosity Never Retires,' is certainly true," Lockridge said. "Curiosity never retired in Morehead; it just keeps growing."
Now, OLLI invites the community to join them as they celebrate five exciting years of learning for adults 50 and older, at an open house starting at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, at the Morehead United Methodist Church, Wesley Hall, located at 227 West Main Street.
The celebration will include special entertainment, including a presentation by J.D. Reeder, an instructor for OLLI this spring, door prizes and refreshments. Following the celebration, the spring list of courses and special interest groups will be presented, and there will be exhibits and opportunities to talk with instructors.
The spring catalog includes the following courses: Kentucky’s Feuding Tradition: Confronting the Myths and Stereotypes; American Popular Music 1945-1958: The Pre-Rock Years; Organic Gardening; Computer Topics in the Digital Age; Classic and Science Fiction Films and Discussions; Writing Your Story; and Studio Art: Drawing and Composition.
Special interest groups include: bridge, enjoying opera from The Met, genealogy, nonfiction book discussion group, and Spanish conversation. A day trip is being planned to Laurel Gorge in early May.
Registration tables will open following the course presentations. Annual membership through summer 2013 is $25. Course fees vary. However, most are $10 for the semester. Registration will open at this event, and will be available by mail afterwards.
