Outstanding UK Pianists Win at State Competition
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 1, 2012) — Two University of Kentucky School of Music pianists, Fernando Vago Santana and Robert Bosworth, were named state winners on Oct. 20 at a statewide collegiate competition. The competition, held at Morehead State University, included the Young Artist Competition conducted by the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), and featured talented artists from across the state.
Originally from Vitoria-ES, Brazil, Santana won the state round of the Young Artist Competition (College-level). He will go on to represent Kentucky at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, in January 2013 competing against winners of state competitions from eight other southeastern states. The national finals of the competition will be held in March of 2013 in Anaheim, Calif.
"The best outcome of the competition is that it gives me an opportunity to give back to the university and the state," said Santana, who is completing a master's degree in piano performance at UK.
Bosworth won the Bluegrass Kentucky Music Teachers Association (KMTA) State Competition. He is a junior at UK completing a bachelor's degree in piano performance.
Irina Voro, professor of creativity and piano at UK School of Music in the UK College of Fine Arts, believed the two were very deserving of the recognition. "The students worked hard and I am glad they delivered under the pressure."
Both students study in Voro's piano studio, part of the UK Division of Keyboard, Voice, and Strings, which encompasses the extensive activities of the UK Symphony Orchestra, Choral and Opera Programs, keyboard activities, as well as all of the related ensembles and faculty studios.
