of

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 25, 2011) − The University of Kentucky School of Music will present a concert celebrating world music with performances by regional talent that can be found in your own backyard. The UK World Music and Dance Concert will be presented at 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27, in the Singletary Center for the Arts Recital Hall.

This concert will highlight Lexington and UK musicians performing the music from Africa, China, India, Korea, Japan and America, in addition to a special guest dance performance.

This year's UK World Music and Dance concert will feature an African drumming group with a sogo drums performance and the UK Korean Ensemble under the direction of Donna Kwon, an assistant professor of ethnomusicology at UK.

Lakshmi Sriraman, a local dancer, instructor and choreographer, will perform a Bharatanatyam solo, a dance hailing from India. The event will also feature a collaboration between Tomoko Yonenaga on the Japanese koto and Tim Lake on the banjo performing a combination of Japanese and American traditional tunes.

Additionally, a number of younger artists from the community will perform, including Mary Ma on the Chinese erhu and members of the Pipa Ensemble led by Hong Shao.

The UK World Music Concert is free and open to the public; donations to the UK World Music Fund at UK School of Music in the UK College of Fine Arts are appreciated.
