Student Government to Host Gubernatorial Debate

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 21, 2011) – UK Student Government, in association with the Kentucky Board of Student Body Presidents, will host- a free Gubernatorial Debate at 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, at Worsham Theater on UK's campus. The debate will feature Gatewood Galbraith and David Williams and will cover the topic of higher education in the Commonwealth.

"Student Government is called to help provide a civic education for students," Micah Fielden, UK student body president, said. "By engaging students and bringing the gubernatorial process to campus we are helping students see that getting involved in the political process is easy."

Beau Downey, organizer of the event for SGA, said, "As students, we have not just the opportunity, but also the obligation to take part in the civic process. I hear many people my age saying they do not care about the political process, and I think a big part of that is because some young adults think that the system does not care about them or that their voice is too small to make a change. But the students of the Commonwealth have a combined strength of over 130,000 voices!"

"People should care about politics in Kentucky and national politics because politicians are making decisions that can and will affect the quality of our lives," Fielden echoed. "By engaging in the political process and helping select the best candidate, you are helping your state and nation pick leaders that will ethically and successfully represent the people."

The Board of Student Body Presidents is the collective representation of students from the Commonwealth's colleges and universities.

This debate is an excellent opportunity for students to ask questions of their government and voice their concerns. If you have a question you would like asked at the debate, please send them to ukfalldebate2011@gmail.com
