Take a 'Snapshot' of Mitzi Sinnott

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 6, 2014) — The University of Kentucky Martin Luther King Center invites the campus and Lexington communities to attend "SNAPSHOT," a theatrical performance with special guest Mitzi Sinnott at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, at Worsham

Theatre in the UK Student Center. Sinnott will perform her internationally acclaimed solo show, titled "SNAPSHOT: a true story of love interrupted by invasion."

Sinnott was nominated as Best Actress for her role in SNAPSHOT at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, special selection at Cape Town Festival South Africa and International Women's Festival Tornio Finland, and recipient of a Brooklyn Arts Council Individual Artist Grant and Kentucky Foundation for Women Arts Meets Activism Grant.

Sinnott's SNAPSHOT performance is a combination of words, music and film sharing a story about the quest of a mixed-race daughter from Central Appalachia who eventually finds her homeless veteran father suffering in Hawaii. This theatre performance incorporates singing and dancing while also presenting an emotional ride that inspires positive change for a better future.

"SNAPSHOT will provide variety of perspectives of identity, variety of experiences people have in their lives," said Rosalyn Robinson, assistant director of the Martin Luther King Center. Robinson said that the SNAPSHOT performance will encourage students to share their own ideas and experiences.

Mitzi Sinnott began her career in New York City, where she established one of Manhattan's leading after-school arts programs as the director of the School of the Future's Extended Day Program. Sinnott has also facilitated staff development workshops, including Development Without Limits and The After School Corporation's Director's Institute at Columbia University. She uses different art forms to encourage audience members to analyze and discuss the shadow of our legacy of race, class and violence in America. She believes education and the power of creative collaboration make an impact in building thriving communities.
