Three Days of Events Mark Cardiovascular Professionals Research Week

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 27, 2012) — Three days of activities will mark Cardiovascular Professionals Research Week at the  University of Kentucky Gill Heart Institute and the UK Saha Cardiovascular Research Center during the first week in October. Cardiovascular Professionals Research Week has been proclaimed throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky by Governor Steve Beshear.

On Thursday, Oct. 4, the Dean's Distinguished Lecture will be given by Dr. Ivor Benjamin of the University of Utah. The lecture will be held at noon, in the auditorium of UK Chandler Hospital Pavilion A. Benjamin will present "Cardiovascular Medicine in the 21st Century: Lessons from Randomized Trials to Stem Cells."

Friday, Oct. 5 will be the 15th Annual Gill Heart Institute Cardiovascular Research Day, to be held from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Lexington Convention Center in downtown Lexington. A complete list of events and speakers can be found online. Highlights will include a scientific poster viewing; T32 symposium; welcoming remarks by UK President Eli Capilouto; a noon address by Donna Arnett, president of the American Heart Association; scientific presentations by Dr. John Cooke of Stanford University and Dr. Shaun Coughlin of the University of California San Francisco; and an awards presentation.

Saturday, Oct. 6, the "Advanced Approaches to Heart Disease Management" symposium will be held in the auditorium of UK Chandler Hospital Pavilion A. Continuing medical education credit will be available for this event.

The symposium will offer a program encompassing many aspects of treating heart disease patients.  In addition to expert UK faculty, nationally recognized speakers including: Coughlin, Dr. Cindy L. Grines of Detroit Medical Center Cardiovascular Institute; and Dr. Anthony N. DeMaria, the Judith and Jack White Chair in Cardiology and founding director of the Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine.

Following the symposium on Saturday at 11:30 a.m., a ceremony will take place in Pavilion A to name a UK Chair in Cardiovascular Imaging in honor of DeMaria, former UK Chief of Cardiology.  The recipient of the new chair is the Gill’s Director of Cardiovascular Imaging, Dr. Vincent Sorrell.
