UK Art, Core Classes Showcased at Upcoming Gallery Hop
LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 20, 2012) — Artwork by University of Kentucky students will take center stage at several Gallery Hop events tonight. Among the featured work is an exhibit of the class "Digital Media Space and Time," created by UK students taking art as part of the creativity path of UK Core. This show will feature work by new artists exploring landscapes with large-scale images.
The exhibition from the "Digital Media Space and Time" course uses large-scale images of landscape/land-use to provide commentary and express a broadness of aesthetics and perspectives. The students developed this exhibition under the direction of full-time intermedia lecturers Sarah Wylie Ammerman, Valerie Fuchs and Matt Page, members of the new media area of the Department of Art in the UK College of Fine Arts. This free public exhibit will be presented by LexArts from 5-8 p.m. today (Friday), April 20, at the City Gallery, in the Downtown Arts Center. The exhibit will remain on display through the first week of June.
UK Core, the university's new general education curriculum, aims to prepare students with the critical thinking skills they need to succeed in a competitive global economy.
That same evening students from UK's “Video Art" course under the direction of Associate Professor Doreen Maloney will "video bomb" the Lexington Art League's pARTy. Using pocket-sized projectors, students will throw their videos into the environment, wrapping nearby available walls, objects and even people with moving imagery. The "video bombing" can be seen from 9 to 10 p.m. tomorrow, at Fifth Third Pavilion at Cheapside Park.
Two other art exhibitions from UK Department of Art will be on display as part of Gallery Hop. A Land of Tomorrow show "dontmindifido" will feature the work of art graduate students Natalie Baxter, Andrea Clark, Theo Edmonds, Lora Hufton, Abdul Al Jumaily, David Martin and Colleen Toutant produced under renowned wood cut and digital artist Joel Feldman. This free public show will run from 7 to 11 p.m. tonight, at Land of Tomorrow (LOT), at 527 E. 3rd St.
Just across the street from the UK Core course's exhibition is the digital photography exhibition "Metamorphose" also featuring work by UK art students. This free public exhibit is on display during Gallery Hop at Lexington Public Library - Central Library.
