UK Dental Faculty Present at College of Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 8, 2015) - Faculty members from the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry's Center for Oral Health Research had a prominent presence at the recent College of Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics (CDABO) annual meeting held in Avon, Colorado. Four of the nine presenters at the event hailed from UK.

Drs. James Hartsfield, Sarandeep Huja, Thomas Kluemper and Lorri Ann Morford presented on various topics around offering personalized orthodontics and the relationship of genetics to the future of the specialty.

Hartsfield, who is board certified in both orthodontics and clinical genetics and co-editor in chief of the Journal of Pediatric Genetics, also served as the event’s scientific chair of the planning committee, overseeing the selection of programming this year.

Understanding a patient’s genetics and its impact on facial growth and orthodontic treatment is considered the next big step in orthodontics. Attendees heard presentations on cutting edge treatment and how genetics affect variations in facial growth, tooth positioning and speed of tooth movement, among other topics.

“This was the first national orthodontics meeting that focused on the concept of personalized or precision medicine being applied to orthodontics. I was glad to have the opportunity for so many investigators to present their progressive research to a group of outstanding orthodontic clinicians. Everyone took home many new insights to apply when treating their patients,” said Hartsfield.

UKCD faculty members presented the following sessions:

·         Genetics and Your Family, Health and Genealogy (Hartsfield)

·         Dental Agenesis and Cancer (Morford)

·         Genetic and Treatment Factors in External Apical Root Resorption with Orthodontia (Hartsfield)

·         Classification, Etiology and Treatment of Sleep Apnea (Can Camouflage Orthodontic Treatment Predispose to Sleep Apnea?) (Kluemper)

·         Biology of Expedited Tooth Movement (Huja)

·         When, How and Why You Should Refer Your Patient to a Clinical Geneticist (Hartsfield)

More details on the above presentations are available here.
