UK to Hold Events in Observance of National Public Health Week

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 2, 2012) − Members of the University of Kentucky Student Public Health Association (UKSPHA) at the UK College of Public Health, a student affiliate of the Kentucky Public Health Association (KPHA), will host a series of events on campus in observance of National Public Health Week, April 2 - 8.

Each day of National Public Health Week will feature a different public health issue and UKSPHA members will team up with other organizations on campus to hand out educational information and posters to students. The week's events are as follows:

  • Monday, April 2:  Active Living and Healthy Eating - Campus awareness 10 a.m. to noon, outside White Hall Classroom Building.  Educational materials and free healthy snacks will be provided.
     
  • Tuesday, April 3:  Tobacco and Alcohol Day - Campus awareness 10 a.m. to noon, outside White Hall Classroom Building. A petition for smoke-free Kentucky and information on alcohol provided. A multidisciplinary panel discussion on tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs from noon to 1 p.m. in 127 Wethington Building, 900 South Limestone.  Free lunch will be provided.
     
  • Wednesday, April 4:  Communicable Diseases Day - Campus awareness 10 a.m. to noon, outside White Hall Classroom Building with information from UNICEF. College of Public Health Open House 10 a.m. to noon in CPH room 115, 111 Washington Ave.
  • Wednesday, April 4:  Movie night with free popcorn, 7:30 p.m. in CPH room 115. Movie - “Contagion.”
     
  • Thursday, April 5:  Reproductive/Sexual Health - Campus awareness 10 a.m. to noon, outside White Hall Classroom Building with experts from University Health Service, educational literature, and free condoms.
     
  • Friday, April 6:  Mental and Emotional Well-Being - Campus awareness 10 a.m. to noon, outside White Hall Classroom Building.  Information on mental health and violence prevention will be provided.
     
  • Saturday, April 7:  World Health Day.  Theme - Aging and Health.  Educational messages will be shared via UKSPHA Facebook page: www.facebook.com/pages/University-of-Kentucky-Students-Public-Health-Association-UKSPHA/340726479279844 and Twitter UKSPHAKentucky. Questions can be submitted and responded to 10 a.m – 4.00 p.m.

Communities across the country have celebrated National Public Health Week since 1995 to recognize the contributions of public health and highlight issues that are important to improving the public's health.
