UK Wind Symphony Share Stage with Jazz Icon Arturo Sandoval
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Dec. 13, 2013) — This weekend, student musicians in the University of Kentucky Wind Symphony will share the stage with award-winning jazz trumpeter, classical pianist, artist and composer Arturo Sandoval.
The concert with Sandoval will provide UK students an opportunity to learn from one of the best musicians and composers of his time.
"To perform with international musical celebrities and superstars like Arturo Sandoval are very rare experiences for university students, and incredibly memorable. Arturo is one of the world's greatest trumpet players, and his virtuosity will inspire our students in countless ways. The students will also have an opportunity to work with Arturo in rehearsal, and to learn from this collaborative experience," said Cody Birdwell, director of UK Bands and associate professor of music.
A rare opportunity at most music programs, many of UK student musicians in UK Wind Symphony, UK Jazz Ensemble and UK Symphony Orchestra are getting to collaborate on a fairly regular basis with great composers, performers and scholars thanks to the work and connections of the faculty and staff at UK School of Music and the Singletary Center for the Arts.
And for the aspiring musician, chances to perform with and learn from superstars like Sandoval at the collegiate level is an amazing break and provides them with credentials that relatively few university graduates enjoy.
"The experiences serve to inspire students, to raise their individual and collective artistic standards, and to work with one of the world's leading artists first-hand. I expect that the UK Wind Symphony members will learn that talent, hard work and dedication all go hand in hand, and that Arturo Sandoval's commitment to artistry and education is absolutely amazing and inspirational," Birdwell said.
The 2013 Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient and UK Wind Symphony will take the stage 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, at the Singletary Center Concert Hall.
The concert program for the evening will include "Masque" by Kenneth Hesketh, "Concerto for Trumpet" by Alexander Arutunian, "Blue Shades" by Frank Ticheli, and "La Virgen de Macarena," "Caravan," "Maria" and "A Mis Abuelos" by Sandoval.
"The program, which includes classical, jazz and popular music, is extremely enjoyable, and I believe that the audience will remember this event for many years to come," Birdwell said.
A protégé of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie, Sandoval began studying classical trumpet at the age of 12. He has since evolved into one of the world’s most acknowledged guardians of jazz trumpet and flugal horn, as well as a renowned classical artist, pianist and composer.
As of this fall, Sandoval has been awarded 10 Grammy awards. He has also received six Billboard Awards and an Emmy, the latter for composing work on the entire underscore of the HBO movie based on his life, “For Love or Country,” starring Andy Garcia.
One frequently speaks of Sandoval’s virtuoso technical ability or his specialty in high notes, but he who has seen him on the piano, lyrically improvising a ballad, or has had the opportunity to enjoy the diversity of his music, through his compositions from the most straight ahead jazz, Latin jazz or classical, knows that Sandoval is a the most multifaceted musician of our time. "He moves comfortably across genres and instruments — using the trumpet to generate an apocalyptic range of sounds," said the Los Angeles Times.
