UK Women's Choir Concert Brings the Girl Power
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 30, 2012) — The fall concert of the University of Kentucky Women’s Choir is strong on girl power showcasing work of contemporary women composers. The fall concert will begin 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, in the Singletary Center for the Arts Recital Hall. A pre-show performance by UK’s award-winning female a cappella group, Paws and Listen, will begin at 7 p.m.
The fall concert will showcase the talents of the UK Women’s Choir, under the direction of Lori Hetzel, as well as several UK instrumentalists on the violin, cello, oboe and djembe. Undergraduate vocal performance majors will be featured in a series of solos throughout the concert as well.
The UK Women's Choir fall concert is meant to be a celebration of contemporary women composers. The repertoire includes music written especially for adult women’s choirs. Hetzel chose each piece while visiting with other university women’s choirs during her sabbatical in the spring of 2012. Notable works include "Flying" by Rachel DeVore Fogarty, a piece with text based on the words of Amelia Earhart, and "Universal Dream" by Jenni Brandon, a piece meant to express a universal message of liberty and freedom.
UK Women's Choir is made up of more than 100 women of all ages and academic disciplines. The choir has been internationally recognized, traveling to England, Ireland and Wales for their third international tour this summer. More recently, Hetzel and the choir were invited to serve as a demonstration choir at the 2013 American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) National Conference to be held in March in Dallas, Texas. The UK Women's Choir is housed at the UK School of Music in the UK College of Fine Arts.
Tickets for the UK Women's Choir fall concert are $10 for adults and $5 for students, seniors, and UK Women’s Choir alumnae. They can be purchased through the Singletary Center ticket office at 859-257-4929, online at www.scfatickets.com, or in person.
