Warm Up Your Talents at UK's Summer Fine Arts Institute

LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 6, 2016) — The University of Kentucky's Fine Arts Institute will offer a variety of classes this summer that explore different aspects of art and creativity. The classes are all offered as noncredit art courses and are perfect for adults with busy work schedules. Courses range anywhere from metalworking to jewelry making and are offered from the beginners' level to the more advanced.

Three times a year, UK Fine Arts Institute offers weekly classes as well as some weekend workshops in the visual arts to suit various types of schedules. Most classes meet once a week during the evening. The classes and workshops will be held in the new UK Art and Visual Studies Building and in the Metal Arts Building.

There are two summer sessions scheduled this year. Summer Session 1, which will run from May 16-June 24, includes 11 weekly classes and two workshops. Summer Session 2 will run from July 11-Aug. 19.

Registration is now open for Summer Session 1 and includes the following classes:

Bookmaking

  • “Art of Bookmaking for Beginners” with Renee Oschwald, 6-9 p.m. Wednesdays, beginning May 18.

Ceramics

  • "Beginning Ceramics" with Jill Coldiron, 6-9 p.m. Thursdays, beginning June 2, and
  • "Taking Ceramics to the Next Level" with Coldiron, 6-9 p.m. Tuesdays, beginning May 31.

Drawing

  • "Explorations in Drawing" with Christine Kuhn, 6-9 p.m. Mondays, beginning May 16;
  • “Foundational Portrait Drawing” with Thomas Baker, 6-9 p.m. Wednesdays, beginning May 18; and
  • "Open Drawing" sessions with Anthony Roccanova, 9 a.m.-noon Saturdays, all summer.

Jewelry Making

  • “Connections: An Exploration of Jewelry Design for Beginners” with Dwayne Cobb, 6-9 p.m. Tuesdays, beginning May 17.

Metalworking

  • "Metalworking" with Jeremy Colbert assisted by Nick Guarliardo, 6-9 p.m. Thursdays, beginning May 19.

Painting

  • "Learn to Paint, Yes You Can!" with Kuhn, 6:30-9:30 p.m. Tuesdays, beginning May 17, and
  • "Layering it On: Mixed Media Painting Techniques" with Kuhn, 6-9 p.m. Wednesdays, beginning May 18.

Printmaking

  • “Printmaking Using Contemporary Woodcut Practices” with Sarah Brown, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturdays, beginning May 14

The following one-day workshops will also be offered during Summer Session 1:

Fiber Arts

  • "Felting on the FeltLOOM Felting Machine" with Laverne Zabielski, 1-3 p.m., May 28, June 4 or June 18.

Photography

  • "One Day Digital Photography Workshop for Beginners" with Lennon Michalski, June 4 or June 18.
