#TrendingTopics Continues with College Life and Debt Discussion
LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 5, 2014) — The Student Activities Board’s #TrendingTopics series continues! This interactive discussion on College Life and Debt, will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 6, in the William T. Young Library Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public, and attendees should be sure to bring their smartphones, as the audience will have the chance to ask questions and share their opinions via social media.
With college students graduating and being tens of thousands of dollars in debt, a big issue in the mind of many University of Kentucky students is how they will pay off their loans after they move their tassels and walk across the stage at graduation. From room and board, mandatory meal plans, and high interest on college loans, most students don’t realize that by sending in their commitment to a college, they are also signing up for a lifetime of debt. Dr. Jeffrey Bieber, who has served as director of the Office of Higher Education Research in the College of Education since 1993, will lead the discussion.
“College debt is a topic that affects our community every day and will for years to come,” said Emily Damron, SAB director of engaging issues. “Facing the issue now is important in order to raise awareness and to seek solutions for future generations.”
The panel will allow attendees to interact and to voice their opinions and questions using the hashtag #TrendingTopicsCLD. Students are encouraged to bring smartphones in order to participate in the debate.
