LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 10, 2013) — Gun control is _____. Necessary? A violation of my rights? The Student Activities Board will give students an opportunity to decide at #TrendingTopics: Gun Control, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, via the online platform VoiceThread. This event, sponsored by the Engaging Issues Committee, is a virtual event and open to all.

Gun control has become a widely debated topic in recent months, in part due to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting and 2012 Aurora, Colo., theater shooting. Opponents of gun control maintain that the proposed laws are direct violations of the Second Amendment to the Constitution, while proponents advocate for stricter regulation in order to create a safer environment. Students will see both sides of the debate via articles, videos and graphics and will be able to voice their own thoughts.

“Students will be instantly connected to others who are just as passionate about gun control with #TrendingTopics,” said Emily Damron, director of engaging issues. “This event brings a new level of innovation to education, advocacy, and informing the community about current events.”

#TrendingTopics will be facilitated through the online platform VoiceThread, which allows for interactive presentations that can be accessed online and via Apple mobile devices. Students will be able to view the presentation and voice their own opinions from virtually anywhere. The series aims to educate those who attend on both sides of hotly debated topics in order to create a more informed, opinionated community.
