LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 5, 2018) As "Silent Night" commands the Singletary Center for the Arts stage this weekend, history will be made.

Not only is University of Kentucky Opera Theatre beginning its 2018-19 season with an opera related to the Great War during the centennial of World War I on the Armistice Centennial and during the weekend leading up to Veterans Day, it will also mark the first time a college has been given the honor of performing the 2012 Pulitzer Prize-winning opera.

UK Opera Theatre is pleased with the vote of confidence in the company to present such a celebrated opera. “This production is sure to be a meaningful and memorable experience and we are lucky to have such talented students, faculty and staff here at UK Opera Theatre to offer you a world class performance experience right here in Lexington,” said UK Opera Theatre Director Everett McCorvey.

Based on events from World War I, “Silent Night” is an internationally popular opera that recounts the incredible story of a spontaneous ceasefire on the battlefield in Belgium between German, French and Scottish soldiers on Christmas Eve in 1914. The award-winning music by composer Kevin Puts and librettist Mark Campbell thread together the emotions of hope, yearning and despair experienced by the soldiers living in the trenches.

UK Opera Theatre’s production is directed by Richard Gammon. A graduate of the New England Conservatory, he has previously directed shows for UK Opera Theatre and the Kentucky Shakespeare Festival in Louisville.

"Silent Night" will command the stage 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 9-10, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, at the Singletary Center.

Tickets for “Silent Night” are $55-45 for the general public and $50-40 for seniors based on location. Student tickets are $15.
