LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 22, 2021) — Staff at University of Kentucky Transportation Services delivered a van-load of donations to Big Blue Pantry (BBP) last week, totaling 960 pounds. The food and personal care items were donated during the annual Donations for Citations program.

This year marks the sixth for Donations for Citations, which helps stock BBP shelves. Since its inception, more than 11,500 pounds of staples have been collected for Big Blue Pantry.

Donations for Citations enables UK students and employees who have a parking citation to pay their fee by making a donation to the pantry, an on-campus organization that works to combat hunger and food insecurity for students. This year’s drive began on March 1 and ran through March 12.

"At the Big Blue Pantry, we’re so thankful for our continued partnership with UK Transportation Services," said Jason Schubert, BBP manager. "Donations for Citations is a great way for students to give back, and it helps us stock our shelves and spread awareness about the Big Blue Pantry. And a huge thank you to all the Wildcats who donated this year and helped support the Big Blue Pantry!"

Lance Broeking, director of UK Transportation Services, said “while citations are an unfortunate necessity at an urban institution as large and complex as UK, this program enables the UK community to turn a negative into a positive by supporting a worthwhile cause."

Donations for Citations is one of BBP’s largest food drives of the year. The pantry relies upon donations from the campus community year-round to keep their shelves stocked.

Visit the Big Blue Pantry’s website for information about hours of operation or to offer donations directly. BBP also has an online gift fund which allows the organization to accept monetary donations that are used to purchase food items.

As the state’s flagship, land-grant institution, the University of Kentucky exists to advance the Commonwealth. We do that by preparing the next generation of leaders — placing students at the heart of everything we do — and transforming the lives of Kentuckians through education, research and creative work, service and health care. We pride ourselves on being a catalyst for breakthroughs and a force for healing, a place where ingenuity unfolds. It's all made possible by our people — visionaries, disruptors and pioneers — who make up 200 academic programs, a $476.5 million research and development enterprise and a world-class medical center, all on one campus.

In 2022, UK was ranked by Forbes as one of the “Best Employers for New Grads” and named a “Diversity Champion” by INSIGHT into Diversity, a testament to our commitment to advance Kentucky and create a community of belonging for everyone. While our mission looks different in many ways than it did in 1865, the vision of service to our Commonwealth and the world remains the same. We are the University for Kentucky.
