Grad School Seeks Kirwan Prize Nominees

 LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 6, 2010) −The Graduate School at the University of Kentucky is now accepting nominations for the Albert D. and Elizabeth H. Kirwan Memorial Prize.

The Kirwan Memorial Prize is given to a faculty member in recognition of outstanding contributions to original research or scholarship. Kirwan Prize winners will receive $5,000, as well as appropriate scholarly recognition of the achievement. The prize will be awarded at the University Founder’s Day ceremony on Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2011.

At the request of their two sons, the Albert D. and Elizabeth H. Kirwan Memorial Fund recognizes their parents' collaborative research efforts and Ab Kirwan's endeavors at creating an environment at UK that promoted high quality research and scholarship. 

Head football coach from 1938 to 1944 and later dean of men, Ab Kirwan was a distinguished faculty member and scholar in the field of southern history, dean of the Graduate School and served as UK president from 1968 to 1970. 

Elizabeth Kirwan was awarded the Sullivan Medallion in 1973 for her service to both UK and the Lexington community. Elizabeth Kirwan's service included executive roles in more than 10 organizations, including president of the UK Women’s Club and chairwoman of Lexington Parks and Recreation Board.

The deadline for nominations is Dec. 1.
