AppalachiaCorps Internship Program continues in Summer 2023
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 13, 2023) — The University of Kentucky Appalachian Center and the Center for Service-Learning and Civic Engagement announce the continuation of the AppalachiaCorps program for Summer 2023.
ApppalachiaCorps connects students with organizations in Eastern Kentucky and the greater Appalachian region, providing them a summer internship opportunity concentrating on their career goals. Participants will acquire valuable leadership and networking skills during this internship, preparing them for future jobs and placements.
Students in the past have interned at organizations such as Appalachian Citizens Law Center, Highlands Museum & Discovery Center, Pikeville Medical Center and Livelihoods Knowledge Exchange Network (LiKEN).
“AppalachiaCorps was a fantastic experience that I would recommend to anyone interested in working in the Appalachian Region," said Nolan Blakeman, a December 2022 UK graduate who is now the department manager of UK’s Appalachian studies program. "My AppalachiaCorps internship at LiKEN gave me the knowledge, skills and experience I needed to transform my passion for Appalachia into a career.”
The Appalachian Center has informational meetings taking place this semester, the first to be held this Friday, and are currently taking inquiries from students. Participation in the program is on a first-come, first-served basis and preference will be given to students who can make their own arrangements with host organizations.
The first information session will be held 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, at The Appalachian Center, located at 624 Maxwelton Court. There will also be a Zoom option.
Additional information sessions will take place March 3, March 31, April 14 and April 21.
The internship program is available to all UK undergraduate and graduate students in good standing. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Students can come from any discipline. Students in the UK College of Arts and Sciences, from the Appalachian region, who are first generation and those working through the Federal Work-Study program are strongly encouraged to apply.
