Markey Race For Women's Cancer: Start Training Now!

LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 16, 2010) — The Markey Race for Women's Cancer is June 27, and organizers are urging anyone interested in participating to register early and to start training now. Online registration is available at www.markeyraceforwomenscancer.com.

The Markey Race for Women’s Cancer was founded in 2009 to raise money for the Markey Cancer Center Gynecologic Patient Advocacy Fund. The fund provides resources for patients who cannot afford the basic needs, beyond treatment, that are critical for survival. For some patients, this may be gas money to travel to chemotherapy appointments, for others, it may be supplemental nutrition.

The race offers three different distance events to encourage participation from people with a range of different athletic abilities. The Sprint Triathlon consists of a 400-meter swim, a 14-mile bicycle ride and a 3.1-mile run. The Duathlon consists of two 3.1-mile running legs with a 14-mile cycle leg in between. The 5k Fun Run/Walk is 3.1 miles that can be taken at any pace, from a stroll to a sprint. 

Individuals may register for any of the three events. Individual entry fees for the Sprint Triathlon or Duathlon are $60 per person through June 17, or $75 thereafter. Entry fees for the 5k Fun Run/Walk are $25 through June 17, or $30 thereafter. Three-person relay teams may also register for the Sprint Triathlon.  Entry fees for a relay team are $90 through June 17, and $115 thereafter. 

The entry fee is a tax-deductible donation, and all proceeds directly benefit the Markey Cancer Center Gynecologic Patient Advocacy Fund.  Participants will receive a receipt with their race packet.  Registration also includes a Headsweats race hat, a race T-shirt (while supplies last), a free barbecue lunch, post-race food and awards presentation and afternoon access to Spindletop for a Family Fun Day.

There will be a post-race party at Al’s Bar including live music and one free beer (for participants over 21).  Admission is free to all participants with a race number. Admission for others is only a $5 donation.
