LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 15, 2024) — The University of Kentucky Advising Network is now accepting nominations for the 2024 Ken Freedman Outstanding Advisor Awards.

Each year, the Ken Freedman Outstanding Advisor Award is presented by the UK Advising Network, housed in the Office for Student Success, to one full-time professional advisor and one faculty advisor for outstanding service.

Ken Freedman, the award's namesake, was one of the founders of the UK Advising Network in 1986, and served as a professional advisor at UK until his death in 2001. The Ken Freedman awards recognize current advisors who are going above and beyond to support students at UK.

“Academic advisors are an integral part of student success,” said Jennifer Stevens, past chair of the UK Advising Network. “We do more than help students register for classes. Advisors get to know students and help them achieve their goals. We hear about their challenges and address their individual needs. The Ken Freedman Day of Recognition allows us to celebrate and recognize the remarkable work that advisors do.”

All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to participate in the nominating process. Nominees are not limited to colleges. Any faculty or staff member who plays a role in advising is eligible. To make a nomination for the 2024 Outstanding Professional or Faculty Advisor Award, click here. To make a nomination for the 2024 Outstanding New Advisor or Advising Administrator click here.

All nominations are due by 11:59 p.m. Friday, March 22, 2024. You can send any questions to advisingnetwork@uky.edu. To see the full list of previous Ken Freedman awardees, click here.

All award recipients will be recognized at an awards luncheon on campus at the Ken Freedman Day of Recognition in May 2024.

As the state’s flagship, land-grant institution, the University of Kentucky exists to advance the Commonwealth. We do that by preparing the next generation of leaders — placing students at the heart of everything we do — and transforming the lives of Kentuckians through education, research and creative work, service and health care. We pride ourselves on being a catalyst for breakthroughs and a force for healing, a place where ingenuity unfolds. It's all made possible by our people — visionaries, disruptors and pioneers — who make up 200 academic programs, a $476.5 million research and development enterprise and a world-class medical center, all on one campus.

In 2022, UK was ranked by Forbes as one of the “Best Employers for New Grads” and named a “Diversity Champion” by INSIGHT into Diversity, a testament to our commitment to advance Kentucky and create a community of belonging for everyone. While our mission looks different in many ways than it did in 1865, the vision of service to our Commonwealth and the world remains the same. We are the University for Kentucky.
