Transformative Learning: Now is the perfect time to start preparing for finals

Integrated Success Coach Trevor Tierney talks about using spaced repetition to study for exams.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Dec. 2, 2024) — As finals approach, it’s natural to feel a mix of excitement and stress. The Integrated Success Coaches in the Department of Transformative Learning are here to make sure you don’t go through it alone. With the right strategies, support and a bit of perspective, students can walk into your exams ready to do your best. Here’s how to prepare for finals and make the most of your studying.

  • Start with a plan! The foundation of good preparation is a well-organized plan. Start by breaking down subjects and setting specific study goals for each one. Instead of vague tasks like “study math,” try “complete three practice problems from each chapter” or “review calculus notes from sections 4-6.” This not only makes the task more manageable but also creates a sense of progress. Here’s a planner template to get started!
  • Prioritize! Review all classes and assignments, identifying which subjects require the most attention. Prioritize based on three factors:
    • Difficulty: Which subjects are the most challenging? Dedicate extra time to understanding these.
    • Time: How much time will each subject require? Subjects with larger volumes of material might need an earlier start.
    • Impact: How important is each final to the overall grade? This can help students allocate time effectively.
  • Embrace Active Study TechniquesReading through notes can be passive, and while it’s useful, students retain more by engaging actively. Try techniques like:
    • Practice tests: Self testing helps with retention and lets you identify areas that need more focus.
    • Teaching the material: Explaining a concept to someone else, even if it’s to an imaginary student, reinforces understanding.
    • Flashcards: These are effective for memorizing terms and quick facts, and they make it easy to fit studying into small time slots.
    • Check out more active learning strategies like spaced repetition on Transformative Learning’s YouTube channel
  • Take care of your physical and mental health! Sleep, exercise and nutrition are important. Finals may feel like a time for all-nighters, but consistent sleep enhances memory retention and performance. Exercise, even a short walk, releases endorphins that can help clear the mind and reduce stress. Don’t forget to eat regularly and stay hydrated.

Finals season is often associated with stress, but it’s possible to make it through successfully with the right mindset and approach. Integrated Success Coaches are here to support students with practical tips, personalized plans and ongoing encouragement. Make an appointment with a coach and walk into each exam feeling confident, calm and ready. You’ve got this!
