LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 31, 2024) — For the first time in more than 25 years, students can pursue a bachelor’s degree within the nationally ranked University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy. Launching in Fall 2025, the Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences (BSPS) offers an interdisciplinary path to careers in science, research and health care.

“This is a historic milestone for our college and the university,” said Dean R. Kip Guy, Ph.D. “The BSPS program brings undergraduate students a curriculum focused on turning scientific passion into real-world innovation, the chance to work with world-class mentors and access to cutting-edge facilities. It’s designed for students who want to make a difference — whether advancing groundbreaking research, driving pharmaceutical discovery or improving health care systems.”

Designed for the Next Generation of Innovators

The pharmaceutical industry is a major driver of the U.S. economy, directly employing more than 1 million workers and supporting nearly 5 million jobs nationwide. The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America reports the biopharmaceutical sector has seen more than 30% growth since 2015, demonstrating its resilience even during economic downturns.

Graduates of the BSPS program will be prepared for careers in drug development, manufacturing, regulatory affairs, clinical trials, medical marketing and pharmaceutical sales. The curriculum combines foundational sciences and humanities with specialized coursework in medicinal chemistry, drug development and health care analytics, ensuring students gain theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience.

For students considering further education, the BSPS provides a strong foundation for graduate and professional programs in pharmacy, medicine and related fields. Whether entering the workforce immediately or pursuing advanced degrees, graduates will be well-positioned for success in this thriving industry.

A Curriculum with Real-World Impact

The BSPS program emphasizes hands-on learning and career readiness, equipping students with the skills to analyze scientific research, conduct clinical trials and communicate findings to diverse audiences, including scientists, health care providers and industry professionals.

“Through decades of training advanced pharmaceutical sciences professionals, the college has cultivated strong industry connections, providing invaluable hands-on training and employment opportunities for our students,” said Guy. “Our faculty aren’t just educators — they are industry insiders who continue to develop new drugs, shape drug policy, and drive pharmaceutical innovation.”

Building Careers in Pharmaceutical Innovation

“What makes the BSPS program stand out is its focus on real-world experiences and workforce readiness,” said Eric Welch, Ph.D., director of undergraduate studies. “Students will have the opportunity to engage in groundbreaking scholarship, gain experience in clinical and research settings and work alongside experts in the field. Whether they pursue immediate employment or continue their education in advanced programs, this degree positions them to make meaningful contributions to science and health care.”

The program’s versatility ensures graduates are well-prepared to address real-world challenges, whether in pharmaceutical innovation, healthcare systems or biomedical research. By integrating classroom learning with experiential opportunities, the BSPS empowers students to drive advancements that can improve health outcomes.
