LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 29, 2025)  To recognize the critical work of instructors and to offer an institution-wide venue for the advancement of teaching at the University of Kentucky, the Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching (CELT) is hosting the second UK Teaching Excellence Symposium 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, in the Gatton Student Center.

As with research, UK faculty and instructors advance the knowledge and practice of teaching when they share and learn from each other's expertise, experiences and scholarly work. UK's educational mission depends on a dynamic, engaged community of teachers who seek innovative and effective ways of enabling student learning and success.

The symposium provides a space for UK educators to share examples of exceptional teaching and explore critical issues in teaching and learning. The campus community is invited to register for the symposium and may attend as schedules allow. Drop in for a single session, stay for the whole day or anything in between. Registration is free.

Throughout the day, concurrent sessions will feature presentations on a range of topics such as teaching durable career skills, artificial intelligence (AI), digital tools and innovations, game-based learning, curriculum design, student partnerships, online education and teaching in specific fields from health care to humanities. The symposium will feature 84 presenters representing 15 colleges and 45 departments or schools across UK’s campus.

In addition, the Teaching Excellence Symposium features a keynote address from John Gallagher, Ph.D., professor at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, on “A Spectrum of AI Use in the Classroom.” Gallagher researches how writing technologies shape workflow habits to better understand ways that writers interact with their audiences. He focuses on participatory writing, writing interfaces and templates, AI and machine learning communication, natural language processing and STEM communication. His latest book manuscript, “AI Through the Experts’ Eyes: Communicating Complex Ideas,” is under contract with the University of Pittsburgh Press for 2026.

As the state’s flagship, land-grant institution, the University of Kentucky exists to advance the Commonwealth. We do that by preparing the next generation of leaders — placing students at the heart of everything we do — and transforming the lives of Kentuckians through education, research and creative work, service and health care. We pride ourselves on being a catalyst for breakthroughs and a force for healing, a place where ingenuity unfolds. It's all made possible by our people — visionaries, disruptors and pioneers — who make up 200 academic programs, a $476.5 million research and development enterprise and a world-class medical center, all on one campus.
