91.3 WUKY Adds BBC World News Channel

LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 4, 2017) — WUKY’s HD 3 channel is now home to the BBC World Service. Listeners will now have access to the BBC 24/7 and Topline updates on the station's primary channel at 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. In addition, listeners will have access to the BBC World News Module at www.wuky.org, where they can also stream the BBC and download the WUKY phone app for on-the-go listening.

Established in 1922, the BBC is a public service funded by a license fee paid by UK households. Their mission is similar to that of NPR, which is to enrich people's lives with programs and services that inform, educate and entertain.

The BBC World Service has been one of the globe’s most comprehensive sources for news for over 80 years. The BBC has more journalists in more countries covering stories from more locations than anyone else. They broadcast to the world on radio, on TV and online, providing news and information in 27 languages and world service English language.

91.3 WUKY station manager, Tom Godell, said the addition of the BBC news would provide an international perspective from a well-known and trusted news source.

UK Professor Doug Boyd, in the Department of Communication in the College of Communication and Information had the opportunity to work for the BBC World Service Audience Research Department in London while on sabbatical in the mid-1980s.

“I was most pleased to hear that our station will be broadcasting BBC World Service English 24/7 on 91.3 WUKY HD 3," Boyd said.  "Those like me in the news-hound business will be enthusiastic listeners.  I do not think there is any argument that the BBC is known internationally as the top news brand.  It has been a go-to source of news for many since the 1900s.”
