LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 13, 2017) Works from teaching and emeritus faculty in the University of Kentucky School of Art and Visual Studies are on display through the end of this month at the Bolivar Art Gallery. A reception for the free exhibition, open to the public through Sept. 30, will be presented as part of Lexington’s Gallery Hop 5-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15, with a performance by artist Rae Goodwin at 7 p.m.

“Faculty Series: Vol. I” showcases recent work from select teaching and emeritus faculty from the school. A slight departure from the traditional faculty show format, the series will occur annually and represents only a portion of the faculty, with different artists exhibiting each year. This inaugural installment includes work in a variety of media including video, photography, ceramics, fibers, sculpture, painting and performance. Participating artists are Rae Goodwin, Arturo Alonzo SandovalBrandon C. SmithJames Robert SouthardHunter StampsHeather Stratton and David Wischer.

Wischer said of his work, “I meld nostalgia and parody to examine the evolving landscape of popular culture and technology. With a mix of digital and analog processes, I’ve used appropriation and collage to distort iconic portraiture, creating an uncomfortable and imperfect depiction of success, fame and celebrity.”

Stratton’s work, “Lunatic Fringe: Moon Studies,” explores the artist’s fascination with the moon, its lore, science and mysticism. “All of the photographic images in this series are digitally archived specimens of simple techniques used outside of the darkroom — made through contact printing with lumen development.”

Southard’s “Riding High, Wide & Handsome” stems from his time in northeastern Wyoming. He deems himself a “cultural collector of artifacts” and incorporates storytelling in the series, reflecting the region’s history, interests and fears.

The Bolivar Art Gallery is located on the first floor of the UK School of Art and Visual Studies Building, located at 236 Bolivar St. The exhibition is available for viewing during regular gallery hours 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, as well as the special Gallery Hop hours on Sept. 15.
