LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 23, 2017) As the Bluegrass finds ways to enjoy some scary good times with Halloween fast approaching, the University of Kentucky Department of Theatre and Dance will welcome to campus audiences looking for a little horror this holiday weekend. To kick off its 50th anniversary season, UK Theatre will haunt the Guignol Theatre stage with the Broadway and Hollywood sci-fi cult classic ''Little Shop of Horrors'' Oct. 26-29.

With book and lyrics by Howard Ashman and music by Alan Menken, “Little Shop of Horrors” is a story about Seymour, a mild-mannered nerdy florist from Skid Row, who improves his chances for personal and professional growth through a bloodthirsty plant from another planet with eyes on world domination. This is one horror, comedy, rock musical botanical mashup that will remind you to keep an eye on your houseplants.

From the ever-growing evil carnivorous alien plant Audrey II to the doo-wop soundtrack voiced partly by the musical’s own 1960s girl group, the Urchins, “Little Shop of Horrors” is sure to be a horrifyingly delightful time at the Guignol.

“The cast is fantastic and the music is unforgettable. You can’t help but go out singing these tunes,” said Nancy Jones, director, producer, choreographer and Department of Theatre and Dance chair.

Joining Jones for this musical theater romp is Tedrin Blair Lindsay, popular Lexington pianist and UK Opera Theatre vocal coach, serving as music director.

The recommended age for audience members for UK Theatre’s production of "Little Shop of Horrors" is 12 and older due to references to domestic abuse and a few occasions of violence.

''Little Shop of Horrors'' will come to life 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, Oct. 26-28, and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 28 and 29. Tickets for the production are $20 for general admission and $15 for UK students with a valid ID. To purchase tickets, contact the Singletary Center for the Arts box office at 859-257-4929, visit online at www.scfatickets.com or purchase in person at venue.

Discount rates for groups of 10 or more attendees are still available this year for UK Theatre productions. Contact the Singletary Center box office for more information or visit in person. Group rates are not available online.

The UK Department of Theatre and Dance at UK College of Fine Arts has played an active role in the performance scene in Central Kentucky for more than 100 years and is currently celebrating 50 years of offering theatre as an educational degree program of study. Students in the program get hands-on training and one-on-one mentorship from the renowned professional theatre faculty. The liberal arts focus of their bachelor's degree program is coupled with ongoing career counseling to ensure a successful transition from campus to professional life.
