UK Libraries Science and Engineering Library Hosts Open House, Weeklong Celebration

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 30, 2017) University of Kentucky Libraries Science and Engineering Library invites all UK students, faculty and staff to stop by and learn more about their resources and services at a week of events kicking off this afternoon (Oct. 30) with an open house.

The open house will feature honored guests, Provost Tim Tracy and UK College of Engineering Interim Dean Lawrence Holloway, as well as UK Libraries Interim Dean Deirdre Scaggs. The event will begin 2:30 p.m. today (Monday), in the Great Hall of the Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) in the Margaret I. King Library Building. It will be followed by a reception and guided tours of the newly furnished Science and Engineering Library, located on the Chem/Phys side of the King Library Building.

In celebration of the work of UK Libraries Science and Engineering Library, there are several activities scheduled throughout the week, including DIY tech tables, student group fairs, data mapping workshops and vendor demonstrations. The detailed schedule of festivities is as follows:

Monday, Oct. 30

2:30-4 p.m. - Open House Kickoff Event (Great Hall, SCRC) Noon-5 p.m. - Student Group Fair (3rd floor, Science and Engineering Library (SEL)) and self-guided tours

UK chapters and groups participating in this fair include: Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), IEEE Robotics, IEEE NASA, American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 3D Printing Group and Society of Physics Students.

Tuesday, Oct. 31

Noon-5 p.m. - DIY Tech Tables (2R near Collaboratory, SEL)

The tables will include such activities as origami, adult coloring books and jewelry making. Noon-5 p.m. - Student Group Fair (3rd Floor, SEL)

Participants will include Formula Kentucky and UK Solar Car Team.

Wednesday, Nov. 1

9 a.m.-1:45 p.m. - Esri sessions (King 213F (SEL))

  • 9-10:15 a.m. - Building a Story with ESRI Story Map 
  • 10:30-11:45 a.m. - Analyzing Data Spatially with ArcGIS Online
  • 12:30-1:45 p.m. - Collect and Analyze Field Data with Survey123

UK Libraries Science and Engineering Library is home to collections related to astronomy, chemistry, earth and environmental sciences, engineering and mathematics, as well as the Map Collection.
