LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 2, 2018) The University of Kentucky School of Music will host several programs this summer to educate music educators and music therapists in how to integrate creative and student-centered practices into their work. Individuals interested in this training can choose from sessions in Modern Band, Orff Schulwerk and Dalcroze.

The Modern Band Workshop will show music education majors and music teachers how to teach popular music styles of the past 60 years to children using informal techniques. Facilitated by the nonprofit organization Little Kids Rock, this new music program works with public school districts to be able provide instruments and resources in the classroom at no cost.

The clinician teaching this program will be Bryan Powell, director of higher education for Little Kids Rock. The workshop, which will be held June 2-3, is free and open to the first 60 local teachers or music education students to RSVP to www.littlekidsrock.org/university-of-kentucky-modern-band-workshop/. The workshop will run 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., June 2-3, in Room 22 in the College of Fine Arts Building.

The Orff Schulwerk Teacher Education Program, created by Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman, is also known as "Music For Children," as it includes the use of poems, rhymes, games, songs and dances to teach music to children. This 10-day course includes instruction in basic pedagogy, recorder playing, special topics, and practice teaching. Courses are offered at different levels: I, II and III.

Faculty for UK's Orff Schulwerk Teacher Education Program are: Betsy Kipperman and Lennie Davis (Level 1), Cindy Hall (Level II), Jay Broeker (Level III) and Sarah Richardson (Movement). The 10-day workshop is $550 and will run 8:20 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., June 18-29. All classes will take place in the UK Fine Arts Building, the Lucille C. Little Fine Arts Library and Learning Center and the Performance Studio in Holmes Hall.

The Dalcroze Institute Workshop, created by Emile Jaques-Dalcroze, is specifically designed for those wishing to learn more about Dalcroze pedagogy and musicianship, but is also beneficial for dancers, music therapists and actors. Participants will be able to become certified in Dalcroze Eurhythmics, an approach with three branches: eurhythmics, solfège and improvisation. This method of teaching focuses on rhythmic movement, refined musicality and improvisation.

Faculty for UK's Dalcroze Institute Workshop are: alumnus Todd Anderson, doctoral candidate Christen Dillon and alumna Holly Smith. The workshop is $550 and will run 9 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., July 9-20, in the Schmidt Vocal Arts Center.
