Nelson Appointed to NIH Study Section

LEXINGTON, Ky. (June 29, 2011) — Dr. Peter Nelson of the University of Kentucky Sanders-Brown Center on Aging has been appointed as a regular member of the Chronic Dysfunction and Integrative Neurodegeneration (CDIN) study section for the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

NIH study sections review grant applications submitted to the NIH, make recommendations on these applications to the appropriate NIH national advisory council or board, and survey the status of research in their fields of science.

As a member of the CDIN study section, Nelson will meet with other members of the panel for two-day meetings three times per year. During the panel meetings, each member will evaluate up to 14 grant proposals, while discussing dozens more projects under consideration by NIH.

"Membership on an NIH study section represents a major commitment of professional time and energy, but is a very important contribution to the national biomedical research effort.  The Sanders-Brown Center on Aging is proud to recognize this significant achievement that documents Dr. Nelson's strong scientific stature in the field of neurodegenerative disease research," said Linda J. Van Eldik, Sanders-Brown Center on Aging director.

Nelson, a neuropathologist, is associate professor in the Department of Pathology and Lab Medicine.
