Office of LGBTQ* Resources Now Accepting Applications for Scholarships, Grants, Internships

LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 5, 2020) — The University of Kentucky Office of LGBTQ* Resources — a unit in the Office for Institutional Diversity — has opened its annual cycle of scholarships available to currently enrolled full-time students. These scholarships are awarded to help defray the cost of tuition, room and board, books, education abroad and other expenses related to the recipient’s academic pursuits at the university.

These scholarships are made possible by gifts to the UK LGBTQ* Endowment Scholarship Fund.

Multiple scholarships of up to $2,000 will be granted. Applications for the 2020-2021 academic year will be accepted until 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, March 31. For a list of scholarships and to access the applications, visit the LGBTQ* Resources website.

In addition to these scholarships, the Graduate School, the Center for Graduate and Professional Diversity Initiatives and the Office of LGBTQ* Resources will be awarding research grants to currently enrolled full-time graduate and professional students. These one-time grants will be awarded to full-time graduate and professional students to support research and/or professional development related to sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and/or intersectional approaches to identity.

The goal of the UK Graduate and Professional Student LGBTQ* Research Grants is to support and promote LGBTQ* scholarship that advances knowledge and fosters an inclusive University of Kentucky community. These awards are made possible by a collaboration between UK's Graduate School and Office of LGBTQ* Resources. Three $1,000 awards will be granted for the 2020-21 academic year.

Applications will be accepted until 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, March 31. For additional information on these research grants and to access the application packet visit the LGBTQ* Resources website.

The office is also currently accepting applications for 2020-2021 undergraduate internships. These internships allow students to spend a year engaged in leadership development and peer support opportunities through LGBTQ* Resources.

Interns commit eight hours per week to supporting office initiatives and receive a $2,200 stipend or are paid or through work-study funds. Additionally, interns receive time and funding to execute a unique project of their own design focused on providing positive growth for LGBTQ* communities at UK and/or in Central Kentucky. As the state’s flagship, land-grant institution, the University of Kentucky exists to advance the Commonwealth. We do that by preparing the next generation of leaders — placing students at the heart of everything we do — and transforming the lives of Kentuckians through education, research and creative work, service and health care. We pride ourselves on being a catalyst for breakthroughs and a force for healing, a place where ingenuity unfolds. It's all made possible by our people — visionaries, disruptors and pioneers — who make up 200 academic programs, a $476.5 million research and development enterprise and a world-class medical center, all on one campus.

In 2022, UK was ranked by Forbes as one of the “Best Employers for New Grads” and named a “Diversity Champion” by INSIGHT into Diversity, a testament to our commitment to advance Kentucky and create a community of belonging for everyone. While our mission looks different in many ways than it did in 1865, the vision of service to our Commonwealth and the world remains the same. We are the University for Kentucky.
